NotebookLM Companion Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 13, 2026

NotebookLM Companion is a Chrome extension that helps you save webpages and supported public YouTube watch links you can access into your own NotebookLM notebooks. The extension is not affiliated with Google or NotebookLM.

What The Extension Does

NotebookLM Companion runs from a user action in Chrome’s side panel. You choose a NotebookLM account and notebook, review the current browser tab, and start an import.

Depending on the page and NotebookLM’s response, the extension may:

The extension does not run a custom backend service.

Information The Extension Handles

The extension may handle the following information in your browser:

The extension does not intentionally collect payment information, health information, financial information, passwords, or browsing history unrelated to the import action you start.

How Information Is Used

NotebookLM Companion uses information only to provide the extension’s source-saving workflow:

NotebookLM Companion uses user data only to provide or improve this single purpose. The extension does not use user data for advertising, analytics, profiling, creditworthiness, unrelated product features, or any purpose unrelated to saving user-selected sources into the user’s own NotebookLM notebooks.

The extension does not sell user data. The extension does not share or transfer user data to advertising networks, data brokers, analytics providers, or other third-party services.

Where Information Is Sent

When you start an import, selected source content is sent to NotebookLM because NotebookLM is the destination you chose.

This may include:

Google account profile metadata may be read from Google account pages or frames in your current browser session when optional account access is granted. This is used only for account selection inside the extension.

NotebookLM Companion does not operate a separate server that receives or stores imported source content.

Local Storage

The extension uses Chrome extension local storage for preferences and lightweight cached UI state, including:

This data stays in Chrome extension storage on your device unless Chrome sync or browser-level settings copy extension data as part of your Chrome environment.

Page Access

NotebookLM Companion reads webpage content only as part of a user-triggered import workflow. It is not a background crawler and does not automatically collect website content while you browse.

The extension asks for broad webpage access so the side-panel workflow can stay reliable after you open the panel, switch tabs, and then import the currently active page. This lets the extension extract readable text from the page you choose without interrupting the one-click import flow with a separate site-permission prompt.

Broad webpage access is used for the active-page import workflow only. NotebookLM Companion does not use this access to monitor every page you visit, build a browsing-history profile, run background website collection, or read pages unrelated to an import you start.

The extension does not bypass paywalls, logins, access controls, publisher restrictions, or NotebookLM limits.

For YouTube/video sources, the extension does not download media, extract captions, scrape comments, or import playlists, channels, search results, Shorts, or live streams as store-facing features.

Optional Google Account Access

The extension may ask for optional access to Google account-related pages such as accounts.google.com or ogs.google.com.

This optional access helps detect accounts in multi-account Chrome sessions and display account names or avatars in the account selector. Basic importing can still work with reduced account-list completeness if this optional access is not granted.

The extension does not manage your Google account, change your Google account settings, or sign you into Google.

Diagnostics

The extension includes diagnostic plumbing for local development and troubleshooting, such as sanitized request status, import timing, and account-detection details. Normal user-facing side-panel flows do not show raw technical diagnostics.

Diagnostics are not sent to a custom backend by NotebookLM Companion.

Data Retention And Control

NotebookLM Companion keeps local preferences and cached state in Chrome extension storage until they are replaced, cleared by the extension, cleared through Chrome, or removed when you uninstall the extension.

Content imported into NotebookLM is controlled by your NotebookLM account and Google’s applicable terms and privacy policies. You can remove imported sources from NotebookLM using NotebookLM’s own interface.

Children’s Privacy

NotebookLM Companion is not designed for children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes To This Policy

This policy may be updated as the extension changes. The “Last updated” date will change when the policy is revised.
